Historic Saugeen Métis Governance
The Historic Saugeen Métis (HSM) exists to support the collective interests of Métis families with long-standing roots in the Saugeen Bruce Peninsula, the Lake Huron shoreline proper, and its watersheds. The organization emerged from community-driven efforts to ensure local voices are represented, decisions are made responsibly, and community continuity is supported through shared leadership.
As a rights-bearing community recognized under Section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982, HSM is governed by an elected Council supported by By-laws and established electoral processes. Council provides direction, oversight, and decision-making on behalf of the community, reflecting long-standing traditions of families working together and taking collective responsibility for matters that affect the whole.
HSM’s governance framework is grounded in the community’s Values and Purpose. Clear roles, policies, and expectations support fair, consistent, and transparent decision-making, protects the organization and those who serve it, and ensures engagement with governments, researchers, industry, and others is accountable and guided by community priorities. This approach balances continuity with adaptability, helping safeguard community integrity and sustainability for future generations to come.
